Last night I had the pleasure of DJing the wedding reception of Megan and William Ladbrooke at Colstoun House in East Lothian — and what a venue it is. Tucked away near Haddington, this stunning historic estate has a barn that manages to feel both grand and genuinely intimate at the same time. Stone walls, vaulted wooden ceiling, fairy lights strung overhead — it’s the kind of space that transforms the moment the lights come down and the music starts.

The Setting: Colstoun House, East Lothian

Colstoun House is one of those East Lothian gems that doesn’t shout about itself — and that’s part of its charm. The stable block barn is a beautifully converted space that sits separate from the main house, giving couples complete privacy for their celebration. With its original stonework intact, arched windows letting in the East Lothian light, and that wonderful vaulted ceiling, it photographs beautifully and gives a DJ the perfect acoustic canvas to work with.

East Lothian is increasingly popular for Scottish weddings, and it’s easy to see why. You’re 25 minutes from Edinburgh, surrounded by stunning countryside, and spoiled for choice with venues. Colstoun House sits comfortably among the best of them — I’d put it alongside Archerfield House and Prestonfield in terms of the quality of experience it offers.

The DJ Setup at Colstoun House

Setting up at Colstoun House is a pleasure. The barn has good access and a generous footprint, which meant I could run the full rig — twin QSC K12.2 mains with dual QSC KS118 subwoofers, LED tube lights flanking the booth, and the diamond-frame DJ console. The stone walls give the sound a lovely warmth and the room fills evenly, which isn’t always the case in older buildings.

I always aim to arrive early enough to set up before any guests are in the room, and Colstoun made that easy. The photo above gives a sense of the behind-the-scenes reality of a modern wedding DJ setup — dual laptops running redundant music systems, the Denon MC7000 controller, and a radio microphone for announcements and introductions. Preparation is everything, and when the bride and groom walk in to that first song, I want absolutely nothing to distract from that moment.

The Speeches and Dinner

One of the things I love about working with couples who book early and plan carefully is that the day flows. Megan and William had everything timed beautifully — dinner service ran smoothly, speeches were heartfelt and well-paced, and we transitioned into the evening dancing right on schedule. That whisky barrel cake stand you can see in the photo above is such a lovely East Lothian touch too — simple, Scottish, perfect.

During dinner I kept things warm and ambient — a blend of acoustic covers, jazz-influenced tracks and some gentle soul to keep conversation flowing without dominating the room. Colstoun’s stone walls carry sound beautifully at lower volumes, so the background music genuinely adds to the atmosphere rather than fighting against it.

The Dance Floor: Kilts, Energy and a Full Room

This is what it’s all about. The photo above is from partway through the evening and the floor was already full — kilts spinning, guests of all ages up and dancing, the bride absolutely loving every second of it. A Scottish wedding crowd with a mix of ages is one of the most rewarding things to DJ for, because when you get it right, everyone is involved. The energy in the room was brilliant from the very first dance right through to the end of the night.

The green lighting in this shot is one of my favourite atmospheric effects in a stone barn setting — it gives the room a magical quality that complements the natural character of the building perfectly. Reading the room is everything at a wedding, and Megan and William’s guests were up for it right from the start. We moved through floor-fillers, a few ceilidh classics that got everyone linking arms, and finished the night on a high with the room packed wall to wall.
