Meldrum House Country Hotel & Golf Course is a 13th-century baronial mansion set on 240 acres of parkland near Oldmeldrum, Aberdeenshire — around 17 miles north-west of Aberdeen. With its own championship golf course, an 800-year-old Cave Bar, and a ballroom built for celebrations, it’s a genuinely special venue, and one I was glad to add to the list of Scottish wedding venues I work at.
I provide wedding DJ and ceilidh calling services at Meldrum House. If you’re planning your wedding here, this page covers what you need to know about how the space works for entertainment. You can also read my full review of a recent Meldrum House wedding for Katie and Ryan.
The Ballroom
Meldrum House’s ballroom, with its private arrival foyer and floor-to-ceiling views over the estate, is built to handle a full-scale wedding reception comfortably. It’s a room with real presence, and one that suits both an elegant sit-down wedding breakfast and a proper, lively evening party once the tables are cleared.
I bring my full sound system, lighting rig and DJ booth to every booking here, and the room’s proportions give me plenty to work with — enough space for a generous dancefloor without ever feeling like guests are dancing in a corridor.
Ceilidh Dancing at Meldrum House
The ballroom works well for ceilidh dancing — there’s enough clear floor for a good-sized set, and the room carries a caller’s voice well. At Katie and Ryan’s wedding, we did the Gay Gordons and the Virginia Reel — two dances that work brilliantly together, particularly with a crowd that’s ceilidh danced before. If you’re planning your own wedding ceilidh, both are worth considering.
Getting There — A North East Venue Worth the Journey
Meldrum House sits further north than many of the venues I cover, and it’s a proper drive from my base — around 150 miles each way. It’s not a trip I make lightly, but the venue makes it worthwhile every time. I’d encourage any couple getting married in Aberdeenshire not to rule out booking a DJ from further afield if they’re set on a particular style or service — I’m always happy to discuss travel for the right wedding.
What I Provide at Meldrum House
Wedding DJ — a full evening disco service including professional sound system, lighting rig, DJ booth, and a music programme planned with you in advance. I take care of everything from the first dance through to the final song.
Ceilidh Calling — I act as ceilidh caller, explaining and leading the dances with traditional music, before transitioning into the evening disco. No prior dance experience is needed among your guests — I bring everyone along regardless of ability, though it certainly helps when a good number already know the moves.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do you know Meldrum House as a venue?
Yes — I’ve worked at Meldrum House and know the ballroom well, including its layout, acoustics and practical flow for a wedding evening.
Can I have both ceilidh and disco at Meldrum House?
Absolutely, and it’s a combination I’d recommend. The ballroom suits both well. A typical format would be one or two ceilidh dances to get everyone up and mixing, followed by the full evening disco. I handle both as a single booking with no changeover needed.
What ceilidh dances work best at Meldrum House?
The Gay Gordons and the Virginia Reel both work well in the ballroom and suit a mixed crowd. See my full guide to wedding ceilidh dancing for more options.
Do you travel to Aberdeenshire for weddings?
Yes — Meldrum House is around 150 miles from my base, and I’m happy to travel for the right wedding. Get in touch with your date and venue and I’ll let you know availability.
Do you bring all your own equipment?
Yes — everything. Sound system, lighting rig, DJ booth, cables, and all supporting equipment. I’m fully self-sufficient on the night.
How do I check availability for my Meldrum House wedding?
Get in touch via the contact page with your date and I’ll come back to you quickly. I keep my calendar deliberately limited to ensure every couple gets my full attention, so I’d recommend reaching out as soon as your date is confirmed.
