Home » Wedding DJ Advice » Cold Spark Machines vs Sparklers — What’s Allowed at Scottish Wedding Venues?

The dramatic moment at the end of a first dance — or the exit from a reception — is something many couples dream about. Sparklers have traditionally been the go-to choice, but at most Scottish wedding venues, cold spark machines have now become the preferred and often the only permitted option. Here’s what you need to know.

What Are Cold Spark Machines?

Cold spark machines produce a shower of golden sparks that rise dramatically into the air — similar in appearance to traditional fireworks or sparklers, but without the heat, smoke, or fire risk. The sparks are produced from a titanium-based powder and burn at a low temperature, meaning they can be safely used indoors and won’t set off fire alarms or sprinkler systems when operated correctly.

Why Most Scottish Venues Now Prefer Cold Sparks

Traditional sparklers present several problems at indoor venues. They produce smoke, which can trigger fire alarms. They require guests to hold lit incendiary devices, which creates liability concerns. The residue they leave behind requires additional cleaning. And many listed buildings — castles, historic houses, stately homes — simply won’t permit open flames indoors under any circumstances.

Cold spark machines address all of these concerns. No smoke, no residue, no open flame, no requirement for guests to hold anything. The machine is operated by a trained professional — us — and positioned for maximum effect. Many venues that previously banned any kind of pyrotechnic effect now permit cold sparks.

Do You Still Need to Check with Your Venue?

Yes — always. Even though cold spark machines are permitted at the vast majority of Scottish wedding venues, there are some — particularly those in Category A listed buildings with strict conservation requirements — where any kind of spark effect is prohibited. We always check with your venue in advance and will advise you honestly if cold sparks aren’t going to be possible in your space.

When to Use Cold Sparks for Maximum Impact

Timing is everything with cold sparks — and having performed at over 1,000 weddings across Scotland, we know exactly when to fire them. The most popular moments:

  • The first dance — fired at a key moment in the song, usually a chorus or a build, for a dramatic entrance or mid-dance reveal
  • A big dancefloor moment — timed to a peak in the music to create an instant atmosphere shift
  • The evening guest arrival — a spectacular welcome as your evening guests walk in
  • The last dance — a finale that sends everyone home with something to talk about

What About Outdoor Sparkler Exits?

Outdoor sparkler exits — where guests line up outside and hold sparklers as you walk through — are still permitted at many venues, provided they’re done in a designated outdoor area away from the building. If this is something you have your heart set on, it’s worth checking your venue’s specific policy. Some venues will permit outdoor sparklers but not indoor ones; others prohibit them entirely.
