Demi and Christopher Muir got married at Stair Arms Hotel, near Pathhead in Midlothian. It was one of the best-attended weddings I’ve played this year. When I arrived, singing waiters were already working the room. The flowers were some of the most impressive I’ve seen. A full flower wall backed the top table, with matching arrangements throughout. For the evening reception, the room had a white LED dance floor and light-up Mr & Mrs letters. Everything was supplied by Instapic, a photo booth and dance floor supplier I recommend on my recommended wedding suppliers page. Between the flowers and the lit-up letters, the room looked genuinely special. That was true before a single guest had even set foot on the dance floor.
The wedding breakfast overran by more than an hour, which pushed the evening reception back. It didn’t take the shine off the night, though. Demi and Christopher came into the room to DNA by Billy Gillies. That set the tone straight away — high energy, from the first track onward.
First Dance and Father-Daughter Dance
Their first dance was Teddy Swims’ You’re the One. The father-daughter dance was I Loved Her First by Heartland. It was a pairing that summed up the day well: a big, contemporary opener for the couple. It was followed by one of the genuinely emotional moments of any wedding evening.
A Live Saxophone Set
At 10.45pm, Gordon Bowie joined for an hour, playing live saxophone over backing tracks alongside my DJ set. It’s one of my favourite additions to a wedding evening. A saxophonist lifts a packed dance floor in a way that’s hard to replicate any other way. Stair Arms Hotel’s evening reception room carried the sound well.
Cutting the Cake
Demi and Christopher cut the cake in front of the light-up Mr & Mrs letters and the flower arch. Guests crowded round for photos. It’s one of those moments that’s simple on paper but always brings the whole room together.
How Demi and Christopher’s Wedding Night Played Out
The dance floor was busy all night. As with any wedding, though, the energy naturally eased off as guests tired later on. I could always rely on a core group of around ten guests to keep the floor moving. Even in the quieter patches, that’s exactly the kind of crowd that makes a long evening reception work.
I finished the night with Caledonia by the Libations at 1am. A 1am finish is what I usually recommend, rather than the more common midnight cut-off. It lets the night end on a high. After midnight, I tend to see numbers drop off quickly.
Overall, it was a good night with dancers on the floor throughout. Stair Arms Hotel is a venue I’d happily add to more couples’ shortlists.
